The Newcastle United social media revamp took a hit today when the latest Twitter Premier League table was published.

Sports digital agency nineteeneighteenfour regularly publish a Premier League table which shows where clubs are placed according to number of followers.

In an attempt to make their Twitter account more appealing the club have relaunched it with the Twitter address @NUFC instead of the original @NUFCOfficial.

Unfortunately for the club, it has backfired with the league table not recognising the switchover and just counting the followers who have joined since the change.

The actual true figure of Newcastle United Twitter followers is 352,000, once followers of the original Twitter name are counted, which places them seventh and narrowly best of the rest – though miles behind those above with Tottenham having more than twice as many followers.

Those of you who follow the club on Twitter will no doubt be hoping there will be some reduction in the endless messages trying to sell you garden gnomes, or onesies, and garden gnomes in onesies…probably.
