Newcastle Star ‘It Could Have Been 8-0 or 9-0’

8 years ago

Davide Santon was booed when he went over to thank the Newcastle fans at the end of Saturday’s match but thinks they have every right after spending a lot of time and money to travel and watch that rubbish.

The Italian defender believing it could have been easily heading towards a double figure scoreline if Rob Elliot hadn’t made any number of saves.

Speaking to the official club website Santon said;

“I went over to say thank you, like I always do, and they booed, though I understand the fans’ reaction.

“I understand because they deserve more from us and they’re right.

“They travel a long way and pay a lot of money to support us, they do not deserve this performance.

“It could have been 8-0 or 9-0 but Rob Elliot made a few good saves. We didn’t shoot at all and I don’t know if their keeper even got his gloves dirty.

“We know we can’t get a place in Europe but we still have to play our best and that’s what we didn’t do today.”

While not defending in any way the players after that display, it is a sad fact that while other players can’t get off the pitch quick enough and refuse to put themselves in front of the media, the ones who are big enough to man up and approach both fans and press get the full force of the abuse/spotlight – something that should be at least shared amongst all the players.
