Newcastle Linked Again With Seydou Doumbia Transfer

Back in September last year we brought you reports from the Russian press that Newcastle were interested in buying CSKA Moscow’s Seydou Doumbia.

Now the Russian daily Izvestia is reporting that Newcastle have maintained their interest and are looking to compete for the striker in the summer.

The likes of Monaco, Galatasaray and Borussia Dortmund have also being said to be interested, although the German club have now secured Adrian Ramos so they aren’t desperate for a new main striker.

Doumbia only has one year left on his contract so CSKA will be looking to cash in this summer but there’s unlikely to be the kind of bargain that Mike Ashley always looks to drive.

The Ivory Coast marksman is 26 and has an unbelievable goals record, after scoring 50 league goals in Switzerland at Young Boys in only 2 seasons, Doumbia then moved on to the Russian club.

At CSKA the forward has started 91 matches but scored an impressive 68 goals, including 14 in 16 matches in Europe, split between Champions and Europa Leagues.

The Russian club are said to be looking for around 23m Euros which equates to around £19m.

With Newcastle needing guaranteed goals next season then a proven goalscorer is essential, whether Mike Ashley is willing to pay the going rate is of course another question, as is whether Newcastle would prove any kind of an attraction to a player with his profile.

Maybe his international teammate Cheick Tiote will put in a word…
