Alan Pardew – Possibly A Different Story If Reached Half-Time Goalless

Alan Pardew has claimed that it ‘could have been a different story‘ if Newcastle had  reached half-time on level terms with Southampton.

If Pardew’s team had ‘achieved’ that then it would have been a near miracle, as it was basically shooting practice for the home side for most of the opening forty five minutes and the biggest threat to them was, that they might have been in shock at missing double figures in terms of decent chances.

When interviewed by NUFC’s own tv channel the Newcastle manager was asked – ‘If we could have got to half-time at nil nil, could it have been a different story?’

In reply Alan Pardew had this to say;

“Possibly. Possibly. The first goal is a breakaway from us, we make a mistake, the first time there was some big openings in our team.

“We never put Southampton on the back foot and therefore they just come and come and come and in the end we gave in, in terms of the goals – because you can’t hold on for that long unless you pose a threat.”

I suppose anything is possible in football but I’ve rarely seen a team dominated as Newcastle were in that first half and Southampton were cutting through whenever they fancied.
