Reported Shola Ameobi Could Follow In Gazza’s Footsteps?
There are press claims that Sven Goran Eriksson is interested in signing Shola, following in the Gazza China footsteps.
Sven is now manager of Chinese Super League club Guangzhou R & F and the Chinese transfer window allows new signing up to the end of February.
With even Alan Pardew now seemingly accepting there is no point in playing Shola, it would appear best for everybody if indeed the older Ameobi could find a new club now, rather than stretch it out until the summer when his contract ends.
With surely Newcastle not hoping for any kind of transfer fee, the way should be clear for Shola to look for somewhere that he could get a game, as surely Pardew will be looking to play Remy, De Jong, Cisse and even bright young hope, Adam Armstrong, far ahead of the striker who hasn’t scored a Premier League goal since December 2012.
Gazza of course led the way in exporting Geordie football culture to China, in January 2003 he signed a 9 months contract with Gansu Tianma, to play and coach. However, he only made four appearances before heading to America for treatment against depression and drink. The onset of the SARS virus in China ensured there was no chance of Gazza returning.
