Newcastle United – The Way We Were
I just stumbled across some old Newcastle United programmes and picked one up.
First up we had a manager’s column – where Jim Smith had his say. Second page in – a picture of our chairman and his comments for the week. Then we had Mick Quinn’s regular column.
Now what have we become?
I’m as black and white as they come but I’m going to cheer Sunderland on at Wembley. They have stuffed up too, made mistakes, but people like their owner and ex-Chairman Niall Quinn care.
Would Newcastle hand out empty seats to local school children? No, we have empty seats every game, the expensive ones that no one can afford. We sell all our best players – as always. We silence our local newspaper.
Every time I start getting back into it and think oh I’m gonna get a season ticket, I’m reminded what a waste of money it will be. Just like the 7 quids we pull out for pies and pints, believing we are helping our club.
The management and players just think we are stupid. Dubai holidays to recharge their batteries. yet they can’t even be bothered to play. All of them would prefer to play for Arsenal or Chelsea.
Then even though Shola and Steven Taylor are local lads, I don’t see them inspiring the rest of the team into passion and pride. I’m bored with football. I’d like to see the terraces reopen and the prices drop, we could do this now since it’s been proven that it was a police error caused the deaths at Hillsborough, not people standing.
I used to love it as a 16 year old being pushed up and down the terraces in the Gallowgate corner, fantastic! I was never hurt. We sometimes sat on the barriers and got sore cold asses but it was great fun, even splodging in the toilets leaking down the steps afterwards.
Now games are boring. Most fans just sit there and don’t sing, even worse some of them look at you like a nutter if you do sing. It’s sad how things change. I wonder what would happen if Gateshead became a big club?
