Alan Pardew The Only One Who Mentioned Marquee Signings
I’m pleased I gave up my season ticket the year after Mike Ashley bought Newcastle United. Perhaps it’s time now for others to do the same?
The gutless Pardew is now spouting off saying it’s an insult to say the season is over. No, it’s not an insult, it’s a fact. The glorious goal they are now aiming for is to finish above a team going backwards at a rate of knots, Manchester United. It’s about the same level of zero ambition when Llambias declared we want to be on a par with Aston Villa and Everton.
Pardew is again showing his complete misreading of fans’ feelings and hopes. In the last transfer window he bleated that NUFC couldn’t afford marquee signings. I don’t recall anybody, apart from him, mentioning marquee signings. He was trying to justify the lack of signings by claiming we were being unrealistic.
As a fan I would have been more than happy with merely keeping who we have, and if they had any ambition at all, bought a goal scorer. Hopefully De Jong will do the job but he’s still not ours. The team were in a great position and a bit strengthening could well have been the impetus to challenge for Europe. And don’t moan about our earlier go at the Europa League. We deservedly qualified for it but were doomed from the start as despite everyone, including Pardew, knowing we needed more players, Ashley kept his profits to himself. He then panicked in January as his blinkered short-term penny pinching left us in real danger of relegation.
The owners of Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd are all billionaires or at the very least multi-millionaires, who all want success, know it costs and are prepared to pay for it. Our owner is also a billionaire but he couldn’t care less, as long as he can get free advertising and a big fat cheque from Sky. I’m not saying we should be signing £20m-£30m players, just that if he wanted to, he could. He’s already £45m in profit over the last five years) just on transfers so it would be a great starting point to invest.
Presumably if, as unlikely as it seems, we are in danger of qualifying for the Europa League he’ll rest the “better” players as he’ll not want to be in a position where he’ll again risk the golden egg of Sky TV money.
For me Pardew gets an easy ride. Ashley sacked our manager to give his mate a job. He may well be a decent manager but he is part of the “Regime”. As long as these people are in charge, aiming for 8th/9th is the best you’re gonna get, and as they themselves have said, cups are not a priority, so forget about a trip to Wembley, or renewing your passport.
“Support the team not the regime”, if you are buying a season ticket you are supporting the regime.
