West Ham v Newcastle 1986 Video Special

7 years ago

Never say never but I’m guessing we are quite safe from a repeat of events of 28 years ago.

Nobody who was at Upton Park for West Ham v Newcastle 1986 style is likely to forget a very unusual match.

Newcastle lined up as follows;

Martin Thomas, Chris Hedworth, John Anderson, Glenn Roeder, Neil McDonald, John Bailey, Paul Stephenson, David McCreery, Tony Cunningham, Peter Beardsley, Billy Whitehurst

A few interesting facts from the game;

West Ham won 8-1

Newcastle ended up using 3 different goalkeepers; Martin Thomas, then defender Chris Hedworth filled in when Thomas went off injured, before Hedworth himself got injured and Peter Beardsley went between the sticks.

Hammers centre-back famously scored a hat-trick that night – a goal against each of the three keepers!

Talk about a night when everything that could go wrong….if you look at the start of the footage you will even see that they get the Newcastle team wrong!

That night at Upton Park was Chris Hedworth’s last ever for Newcastle and he was in the starting eleven, rather than Jeff Clarke as listed on the footage.

Pure nostalgia and just look at the state of the pitch…didn’t seem to affect West ham too much though!

Future West Ham manager (Roeder) and assistant manager (McDonald) lined up in black & white.
