Why PSG Are Signing Cabaye Not Pjanic – Spot The Difference
If you are wondering how PSG made their choice in the Cabaye v Pjanic transfer dilemma, we think we may have spotted the not so well hidden reason.
The Parisian club had been linked heavily with both players in this transfer window and indeed Laurent Blanc was quoted as being interested in both.
Well Newcastle United are said to have come to a deal of around 23m euros for Cabaye.
However, the Italian press have stated that PSG first approached Roma to enquire about Miralem Pjanic but were told they would have to part with at least 55m euros.
So Roma keep their star man and Newcastle lose theirs, funny that.
While Pjanic is just over four years younger, their profiles are very similar.
Like Cabaye, Pjanic moved from France in summer 2011 and plays as an attacking midfielder/playmaker.
So is Pjanic really worth 30m euros more than Cabaye, or have Newcastle undersold our star player?
Well in the two and a half years since they both left France, Cabaye has played 79 league matches compared to Pjanic’s 77 games.
In those matches Cabaye has scored 17 goals and made 10 assists, while Pjanic has scored 9 goals and made 17 assists.
Those stats suggest to me that there is little between them, though I’d suggest Cabaye has the edge as he easily outscores on the harder bit of scoring goals – especially with so many of them from long range.
So is the only real difference the ambition of the owners of the two clubs?
