Match Preview West Ham v Newcastle
Sunday 18 January 3pm

This is a football match with any number of headlines waiting to be written.

West Ham survived intense Cardiff pressure to escape with all three points from the welsh capital but are still only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Whereas all the stats were against Newcastle in our last match against Manchester City, it is a different matter on Saturday.

Newcastle’s last six visits have seen two draws and three wins, the last of those ironically when Carroll and Nolan gave United a 2-1 victory in October 2010.

Last season’s match saw a desperate goalless draw and an early goal would most definitely be welcome in terms of the entertainment factor, to hopefully ensure no repeat of that encounter.

I have a feeling that Alan Pardew will go with the same team as against Manchester City but hopefully with a bit more attacking intent shown from the start against such a poor team.

Just in case you think lightning might strike twice, Cheick Tiote is 25/1 to score first, while more realistically Carroll is 13/2 and Remy 5/1.

Newcastle have been desperate in terms of goals recently and if we don’t score on Saturday we should really start to worry.

West Ham are definite relegation candidates but on top of that, they will be missing defenders Tompkins, Reid, Collins and almost certainly Demel who picked up a head injury at Cardiff.

In terms of scoring goals West Ham have really struggled and want away workie ticket Ravel Morrison is top scorer with only five.

Carlton Cole has now signed another permanent contract but isn’t the biggest threat in the world, while it remains to be seen if Carroll will be risked from the start.

The first goal will probably be more crucial than normal and so for me Newcastle have to attack from the start and press up the pitch as they did early against Spurs.

If we concede first then West Ham’s win at Cardiff shows what happens if you give a team something to hang onto.

It doesn’t bear thinking about if West Ham win and Fat Sam being interviewed afterwards, let’s hope that is the sight we don’t see for a long long time.

Betting – Remy First Goal 5/1 – NUFC Win 29/10 – NUFC Clean Sheet 21/10
