A dominant away performance in the first half of West Ham v Newcastle set the scene for a deserved but eventually nervy victory at Upton Park.

Alan Pardew’s team could have been out of sight in a first half which saw them score two but it should have been four or five, then a last gasp goal in the opening period meant it became an uncomfortable second half for Newcastle.

The Newcastle manager summing the match up;

west ham v newcastle“First half was the platform for victory but West ham were much better in the second half.

“Carroll’s important for Big Sam, he is a terrific character – they were good in that 2nd half.”

It is true to say as well though that Newcastle visibly retreated in that second period and so it was as much that as any attacking intent from a largely woeful Hammers.

Carroll was thankfully totally ineffective and in fact missed one open goal, we got away with a poor second half today but it could just be Newcastle back on track.
