Newcastle v Everton – Who Wins The Argument?

There has been a recent twitter war, Newcastle v Everton fans over which team, and which players, are better.

The amount of comments that appeared beneath the tweet must have been close to setting a Twitter record.  Now I appreciate a handful of fans commenting on social media sites doesn’t represent an accurate reflection of fan opinion but these Everton fans were all united in that no Newcastle player would get in their team, bar Cabaye.  So this made me think.  Who is better, Everton or Newcastle?

Personally, I don’t mind Everton.  Nor their fans on the whole.

If I listed the teams in the premiership from sheer hatred at the top, to the teams I can tolerate at the bottom, they would be near the bottom.  Now the fans commenting on Twitter, were using the argument that they were a MASSIVE 6 points clear of us, and could qualify for Champions League and we can’t.  Why?  Because they are a better team…

For me this is rubbish.  Let’s look player for player.  Krul for me wins hands down.  Howard seems decent, but I don’t know if I would swap Krul for any keeper in Europe if I’m honest.  I just wish he would work on his kicking, but along with Cabaye, he is our most important and valuable player.

Next up is the interesting one.  Debuchy or Coleman?  Debuchy has been immense this season.  Sheer class.  If a poll of Newcastle fans voted now on their player of the season so far, I reckon a healthy portion would vote for our French right back.  So this must be testimony to the quality of Debuchy.  Now Coleman is decent, and scores goals.  Debuchy though is a tremendous asset going forward and is only a matter of time before he scores more.  But Everton fans rave about Coleman.  I think he is good.  In fact he is in my fantasy team.  But would I swap them.  No way whatsoever.  I understand Everton saying the same.  But no chance.  Der Der Der Der Der Der Der DEBUCHY!

Left back is easy.  I would take Baines.  He is quality.  No one would doubt that.  And Mr I can’t tackle, head, and cut inside all the day Santon is a weak link.

Centre halves.  Colo is too old according to Everton fans.  Yet Distin is 4 years older.  And Colo is better anyway.  Jagielka is in form.  And an England international.  Tough on Iron Mike who has been a breath of fresh air this season, but Phil would make my team ahead of him.

Moving on to midfield.  I personally find Barry to be a carthorse and the slowest player in premiership history.  He wouldn’t even make my bench.  McCarthy is OK.  Not brilliant.  Not bad.  I would have Tiote hands down over the pair of them.  Everton fans are united in their disagreement.  Tiote was poor last season but is now a beast once again.   Everton fans think he is a liability and not good!!!  Cabaye starts.  No more explanation needed.

The wingers are interesting.  Pienaar and Mirallas versus Gouffran and Sissoko.  This is a tough call.  I don’t rate Sissoko at all.  I think he is a headless chicken. I think he may offer something in the Tiote role but he just puts his head down and runs.  He is more an athlete than a footballer.  A real shame because he was on fire when he arrived.  I think Mr negative Alan Pardew has played his part in that though.  Sissoko must be fit enough to get on the end of every cross into the box but he is hardly near the edge of the D.  Don’t commit yourself must be the instruction.  I rate Gouffran.  His work rate is unreal, he is a clever footballer and scores.  So I think I would have Gouffran and Mirallas on the wings.  But if Ben Afra played, he would be in the team.  One of the first names on the sheet.  He is a class act, made to be the scapegoat.

Up top.  Remy or Lukaku.  Pace v Sheer power.  Imagine them as a partnership.  Now that would be good.  Truth is neither will be at their respective clubs next season anyway.  There is a chance we may somehow keep Remy but will Chelsea let Lukaku leave?  I would find that doubtful.

As for the managers.  I would easily pick Martinez.  He is an attacking manager with fast and attractive football.  We pass the ball around now compared to last year.  Much improved – but no end product.  Too slow and not enough players go forward.  We never attack teams from the start and we never commit once we have that precious 1-0 lead.  Remember Everton at home last year?  Some will argue Martinez got Wigan relegated but we only finished 5 points clear of them last season.  We are a far bigger club with better players.  Oh and he won them silverware.

I’m sure Everton fans will disagree but my team is below.  Both Newcastle and Everton could finish 4th, but neither will.  If Everton do, I would be quite happy because it would be at the expense of a Liverpool, or an Arsenal etc.  But 6 points behind the Toffees with them to play at St James, we should be hunting them down.

Gouffran/Ben Afra
