Last night Sky Sports broke the news that according to their sources/sauces, there could be four Newcastle transfer deals in January.

With recent times seeing Sky Sports and not the local press as now the norm for the club putting information out, most fans would have taken more notice than your average transfer rumours, especially as the five signings last January were all pretty much delivered/announced via this medium.

Luuk De Jong On Loan?

However, when it comes to the four ‘transfer deals’ they may not be quite what fans were expecting – that is if they believed four transfer deals were happening at all.

The respected Back Page website is usually a very good guide to what is happening in football news in general, and Newcastle United in particular, so I was interested to see the extra information they have supplied to flesh out the original Sky Sports story.

Their understanding is that Newcastle do have four transfer deals that they are hoping to push through in this transfer window but they are very much a mixed bag.

The deals that Newcastle are said to be confident of completing are;

Striker Luuk De Jong from Borussia Monchengladbach on a loan deal to the end of the season

Central Defender Nathan Dekoke from St.Etienne (Turned 18 today and yet to play a senior game)

Forward Bafetimbi Gomis on a pre-contract which would mean him arriving in the summer on a free rather than this window

Midfielder /winger Remy Cabella signing from Montpellier (Though his Chairman has been claiming today that any deal would include their prized asset staying at the French club until the summer)

Back Page also say that these are very much the deals Newcastle have worked on but if they fall down then there are other targets, though whether that would be to arrive in January or in the summer is another matter.

I think most fans are looking for an instant shot in the arm for the season in terms of added quality this window, the next few weeks looking to be sure to keep our attention – no matter how much we hate the transfer windows.
