It has been claimed that Newcastle would sell three of their top players if Manchester United came in for them.
The claims have come in the latest issue of United We Stand, an independent Manchester United magazine.
The comments are made in a regular ‘insider knowledge’ type piece and the editorial team are usually well connected when it comes to events inside their club.
‘The league title seems as out of reach as it did a few months ago and the stark realisation that Manchester United won’t be involved in a title bid for the first time in years is becoming pretty clear.
Perhaps more worrying are the noises coming out of Old Trafford already that “signing players in January is difficult” – easy words to say but why is it so?
Newcastle would sell Cabaye,Tiote and Santon. All would add value to United’s squad, would come, and perhaps most importantly, be eligible for the Champions League.’
Whether Newcastle would sell is a matter of opinion but we are regularly told every player has his price.
With figures of £40m/£50m spent by Man U’s competitors (Arsenal/Chelsea) on single players (Ozil/Torres) then a similar figure to land all three Newcastle players named would you imagine be of definite interest to Ashley.
Whether Manchester United would be seen as such an attractive destination now, would also be open to question.
Manchester United fans would have been aiming higher than our three players previously and so there is an acceptance that they are having to adjust their expectations.
However, it also reinforces that Newcastle have got some very good players and it is vital that everything is done to persuade them to stay before it is too late, not strengthening the squad in January would be a massive own goal.
As for selling any or all of these three players in January – it just doesn’t bear thinking about.
