Alan Pardew talked at length about his star player today and has revealed he believes that the Cabaye Number 10 role has increased both Yohan’s confidence and his value.
The manager also stated that qualifying for the Champions League is an absolute necessity if Newcastle are to keep their best players.
“He has been a great player for this football club and I think he’s got better in this role I’ve given him this year, playing the number ten for us, he has really taken to it and it has boosted his…confidence and boosted his value as well.
“We are a club that unfortunately at the minute is not in a Champions League position, so players can turn around and say they want Champions League as Suarez did with Liverpool. He stayed and they have got themselves in a Champions League position but they wouldn’t be there without him.
“It is a catch 22 situation, you need to keep your best players to get in there and likewise they want to play in there. So you have to give them some hope and that is a position that we really need to get ourselves into this year, or definitely next year, or the years beyond.”
When asked about the pressing time factor if Cabaye is to leave and bringing in a replacement;
“We would need time to do that, we have informed the club (PSG) that is interested and the agents of the player, we are very conscious of that.
“Yohan has been very very good and he is preparing to play against Norwich tomorrow and I expect him to play and I expect there’ll be conversations after the game.
“But you know, a lot of the conversation that you are asking about is going on above me, at the owner level and the Director of Football and the Secretary. They are dealing with that and it is my job to get the best out of Yohan while he is here.”
