In advance of the derby match on Saturday find below a joint statement from Newcastle and Sunderland fans, backed by ourselves at The Mag, NUST, True Faith, A Love Supreme, Seventy3, Roker Report, Fans United, Wise Men Say and Time4Change, in conjunction with the FSF (Football Supporters Federation).
This follows the successful campaign by Newcastle & Sunderland fans, with the FSF, to defeat the ‘Bubble’ plan which intended to force all away fans to travel on official coaches.
“Now both sets of fans are linking up to restore pride in the Tyne-Wear derby, championing a white-hot atmosphere and sporting rivalry while rejecting violence.
“Recent seasons have seen an unwelcome level of hatred and disorder around derby games.
“Genuine fans don’t want the authorities to have any excuse to cut ticket allocations or restrict travel in future seasons, we just want a game to remember.
“We can keep the passion, but lose the poison. Let’s make this a derby to be proud of.”
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match, Alan Pardew gave his backing to the fan initiative when asked about the joint fan campaign;
“I think sometimes it gets a bit carried away.
“You can’t get away from the fact that it is an emotional game, football.
“Hopefully though the behaviour and dignity from everybody will stay in place on the day.
“In that form we can have a good day’s entertainment and hopefully, being Newcastle fans, hope that we win and we accept it in the right manner as we would defeat.”
