Pardew Telling Players They Should Be Ashamed Was Turning Point
The French press have pointed to the Sunderland v Newcastle derby match as the key factor in United’s recent form.
Yoan Gouffran was interviewed by l’equipe and he gave them an insight into what went on in the aftermath of that setback;
“After the game the coach (Alan Pardew) took us back in and told us all that we should be ashamed of ourselves, on behalf of the supporters.
“He (Pardew) said that these people (the fans) aren’t necessarily rolling in money – everybody was taken aback at the strength of this dressing down and questions were asked.
“We now play much more as a team and have the players to finish top eight.”
When things go wrong, how a team reacts to adversity tells you a lot more about them than when they are winning.
Did some of our players underestimate the importance of the derby matches?
I don’t think so but what does seem to be clear is that the emotion of that day has enabled Alan Pardew to energise his players and get a lot more out of them than we saw in that insipid performance on Wearside.
Hopefully we’ll see a lot more of that tonight in Wales.
