Sunderland Going Down – 95% Can’t Be Wrong

When it comes to Sunderland going down, the statistics say that the mackems have only a 5% chance of avoiding this fate.

In the twenty previous seasons of the Premier League, the club that was rock bottom at Christmas has ended up in the Championship at the end of the season on nineteen occasions.

Only one of those twenty teams who were bottom when Santa called have stayed up and that was West Brom at Xmas 2008, although they did have 15 points at that point of the season compared to Sunderland’s miserly 10 this season.

In fact as bottom club, West Brom’s 15 points at Christmas 2008 was only bettered by Barnsley in 1997, the Yorkshire club having 16 points on Christmas Day but still going down.

One bright spot for the mackems is that their outstanding effort in the 2005/06 season will take some beating, after collecting only 5 points by Xmas 2005, Sunderland went on to get relegated and finish bottom with only 15 points come the end of that season.
