Spanish International Winger Linked With Newcastle Transfer

8 years ago

Various media are linking Newcastle United with a Diego Capel transfer today.

Capel is a left winger who currently plays for current Portuguese table toppers Sporting Lisbon.

The twenty five year old is a Spanish international but his minutes on the pitch at senior level have been limited to a couple of appearance back in 2008.

Capel hasn’t been an automatic starter this season for Sporting but scored his first goal of the season in a win over Maritimo which put them two points clear at the top.

The President of Sporting, Bruno De Carvalho, has insisted recently that he is intent on doing everything he can to ensure Sporting stand the best chance of winning the title for the first time in years;

“We have decided there’ll be no sales in January – the club is leading the division for the first time in 9 years and we’re determined to fight for that title.

“Only a ridiculous offer for one of our players will be looked at.”

The reality of course is that the limited finances of Portuguese football mean pretty much every player is available if a ‘ridiculous offer’ is made for a player in the division.

Capel has made 188 league appearances for Sevilla and Sporting, scoring 16 goals.

Touted as a replacement for Jonas Gutierrez, obviously he’s scored a few more than our Argentine winger but still not a great goals return.

The reports suggest an offer of £5m could tempt Sporting to sell and that kind of figure for a player not seen as integral to their title hopes might be too good for them to turn down.
