Newcastle United’s Greatest Goalkeeper – Video Special

Opinions are what keep us going as football fans but I’m sure that the vast majority who saw him play, will agree with the sentiment ‘Shay Given Newcastle United’s greatest goalkeeper’.

Signed by Kenny Dalglish for only £2m from his old club Blackburn, this was undoubtedly the miserable scottish manager’s finest moment at St.James’ Park, nice to see him back playing – even if it is for the Smoggies down the road on loan.

shay given newcastleSigning in 1997 he stayed at Newcastle for over eleven years when he could have easily jumped ship, especially when for any number of years he was the best keeper in the Premier League, indeed recognised by his fellow professionals when he was put in the PFA team of the year, just like Coloccini some years later.

No doubt some of you will say he could have come for more crosses or his kicking could have been better.

Well every player has his strengths and weaknesses and in my book, looking at the total package of Shay Given, he was absolutely brilliant and easily the best goalie I’ve ever seen in some forty years watching Newcastle.

Even Shay Given had his breaking point though and the farce of the relegation season led to him saying enough was enough when Liverpool hammered Newcastle 5-1 at St.James’ Park and anybody who witnessed that match knows that any other keeper would have let in 10+ such was the ridiculous nature of the scousers’ dominance and the feeble defending in front of Given.

If Newcastle had refused to cash in then I have no doubt Shay Given would have won Newcastle enough points to stay up but Joe Kinnear sold him after initially saying they wouldn’t.

Watch this video compilation below to remind you of the brilliance of Shay Given. Yes Tim Krul has got all the promise in the world but he’ll need to do another ten years before we can start making favourable comparisons.
