Referee Edged Out As Man Of The Match Newcastle v Stoke Decided

The man of the match Newcastle v Stoke poll results threw up some interesting results.

Hatem Ben Arfa produced a master class that had a bit of everything, apart from a goal.

Maybe the only Newcastle player to emerge with any credit from a poor first half, Hatem then was right on top of his game against the nine men as he was denied brilliant solo goals twice by the woodwork.

However, we also added an extra contender for fans to consider with their vote for best black & white contender and Martin Atkinson finished second!

57% Hatem Ben Arfa
22% The Referee
11% Yohan Cabaye
 3% Mathieu Debuchy
 2% Yoan Gouffran
 2% Loic Remy
 1% Mike Williamson
 1% Moussa Sissoko

Having seen the highlights now on TV, they only confirmed to me that while Newcastle got some big decisions it wasn’t necessarily the ref getting them wrong, more a case of Stoke imploding and giving Martin Atkinson the opportunity to deal out the punishment.

In fact later on the referee appeared to take pity on the visiting team as he denied Newcastle at least one other cast iron penalty.

A great performance as well from Yohan Cabaye for third place and let’s hope that the luck (and referee’s decisions) carry over into Sunday’s clash with Arsenal.
