Newcastle Defender Outperforming Ramos and Lahm!

Some startling statistics picked up on recent Mike Williamson Newcastle United performances, we called in the Physio Room team to investigate.

This article is part of Ben Dinnery’s latest quality column in our magazine (see below to buy) and in his day job he is part of the aforementioned excellent Physio Room, the article and stats were put together before the wins over Norwich and West Brom so the Mike Williamson stats may have even improved further.

Sometimes you need to go back to basics and for me the introduction of Mike Williamson has been pivotal in the recent upsurge.

Pretty forward thinking, ball playing central defenders are all well and good but first and foremost you need to stop the opposition from scoring and no one in my opinion has proved to be more effective this season than Willo.

In almost 500 minutes of Premier League football Newcastle have only conceded on 5 occasions with the defender managing to nullify over £100 million pounds worth of talent, including the likes of Suarez, Lukaku, Torres and Soldado, not to mention a clean sheet in 90 minuteswhen faced with Negredo and Dzeko. The statistics support my theory; Williamson has been a revelation since his return to the squad after picking up a pre-season injury.

Based on an extensively complex algorithm created by the highly respected Squawka Team, a Performance Score is formulated from over 14 million data combinations within 90 minutes to calculate a statistical performance assessment.

As a defender there have been few better players across Europe – tackles, interceptions, blocks and headers. Mike Williamson (89/495) has accrued more points per minute than six of the eight most highly regarded English defenders, the exception(s) being Cardiff City stopper Steven Caulker (213/900) and Everton captain Phil Jagielka (315/900). That puts Williamson ahead of Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Gary Cahill, plus superstars of the world stage – Sergio Ramos and Philipp Lahm – startling but true!
