Joe Kinnear Contract Promise To Newcastle Star
This weekend brought news that Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is considering his options despite a Joe Kinnear contract promise.
The United centre-back has been frozen out of the first team picture and once again didn’t even make the bench on Saturday for the visit of Southampton.
Taylor’s agent Willie McKay had this to say;
“Steven’s now full fit but frustrated not to be playing as that’s what he loves, he’s not been involved for the last 6 games of course it’s frustrating.
“Steven understands the team’s been on a winning run and the manager doesn’t want to change that winning team.
“Joe Kinnear’s promised Steven a new deal in January and he may be made available for loan if he’s not going to be playing for Newcastle.”
Taylor still has over two and a half years of his contract to go and would be thirty years old if it ran its course and ended in summer 2016.
I’m a big fan of Steven Taylor but agree with his current placing as fourth choice centre-half on current form. To his credit Taylor has taken it well and never complained, plus been clearly supportive (seen on social media at the heart of the signing on team bus after Man U win etc) of the team despite sitting games out.
However, it would be very strange if the club were planning on giving more money and/or a longer contract to a player who is currently fourth choice for his position and still has two and a half years left come January.
Though maybe Joe Kinnear is going to count Taylor as a January new signing….
