Claims Newcastle Star Left Out As Playing Him Would Trigger Contract

A curious story has emerged claiming that a new Jonas Gutierrez contract would be triggered if the Argentinian winger player s many more games for Newcastle.

Jonas has a contract up until summer 2015 and is currently on 193 appearances but it is reported that if he plays an unspecified number of games more, Newcastle United are then obliged to give him a new contract.

The Sunday People story states that they don’t know exactly how many more games it would take but that they understand the clause definitely exists.

Jonas will turn 32 in July 2015 and you would imagine that the club wouldn’t be interested in any kind of significant further contract for a player whose whole game is built on non-stop running.

Gutierrez has made only one start this season in the opening game at Manchester City, plus one substitute appearance at Cardiff.

The rest of his season has been clouded by injury reports and ‘personal reasons’ that led to him going back to stay in Argentina for an extended period.

Jonas has always been a player that Alan Pardew has clearly valued, certainly more than a number of our fanbase who have always been split over Gutierrez’ talents or otherwise.

While it is no surprise the player isn’t getting a game ahead of Sissoko and Gouffran, it is a surprise that Jonas hasn’t even featured on the bench considering how versatile he is and how highly the Newcastle manager obviously rates him.

These claims of a contract clause potentially affecting his selection are sad if true, because even his biggest critics must accept that he is a player who has never given less than 100%, and has been a key figure in recent seasons.
