Shola Ameobi ‘It Just Shows You What Hard Work Can Do’

Shola Ameobi could help seal his ticket to Brazil next summer when his Nigerian team meet Ethiopia today with a 2-1 lead from the first leg.

Shola was born in the Nigerian city of Zaria before moving to Newcastle when he was five. It is often forgotten that he often looked outstanding for England Under 21s and scored 8 goals in 21 appearances. At the time Sven said he was looking to move Shola up to the senior squad but then the Newcastle striker’s career all went a bit bizarre…

Wave Goodbye?

“That was a long time ago and it’s surreal when you think about it. I was 21 with a lot going on and the world at my feet but it was all about trying to get in the Newcastle team back then. For another opportunity to come up now with Nigeria is a great feeling.

“There’s players in squads that never thought would make it but who have done, which is very inspiring. It just shows you what hard work can do.

I’m not one for looking too far ahead but I know it’s a big year for me. I’ve been at Newcastle all of my career almost all of my career and it could be a change, a fresh start which I’m excited about. If I go to the World Cup and do well then anything can happen.”
