Newcastle United – Like That Bloke Who Drank A Bottle Of Whiskey A Day And Smoked 60 Fags

I was in the pub the other day, nothing strange about that.

Sitting with my mates who are all Newcastle fans, the chat got round to the match at Spurs last week.

All of had watched it; some at the game, some live on TV and one just saw the highlights.

Talk about people watching the same game but seeing totally different matches.

We all agreed the players had battled well and Tim Krul was by far the man of the match…but after that things got a little strange.

I couldn’t believe that a couple of them were putting 2 and 2 together (wins over Chelsea and Spurs) and getting 8,464. They were arguing that two wins over top four/six teams showed we were looking as if we could compete again.

On the other hand, the slight majority agreed with me.

The win over Tottenham was one to savour but not because Newcastle had played brilliantly, outplayed the opposition and now were looking like a team that could compete.

Instead it was a case of United starting well and pressing the opposition for twenty odd minutes, grabbing a deserved lead, then defending for our lives for sixty odd minutes and somehow Tim Krul’s goal surviving an astonishing 31 shots with a Premier League record of 14 of them on target.

On any other day of the year this would have been a comprehensive defeat, ironically last season I think we played much much better but were turned over thanks to two excellent Bale goals and got nowt.

As I say in the title, we’ve all heard of a friend of a friend’s dog’s mother’s brother’s grandfather who drank a bottle of whiskey and smoked 60 fags each day yet lived to 110, allegedly.

That match didn’t tell me the toon were back, what it did tell me is that we have a brilliant keeper and an on loan striker capable of a quality finish, plus the players are capable of pulling together as a team.

We can celebrate that and let’s also drink to that  110 year old grandfather.
