Newcastle Players Now Having Nightmares Rather Than Dreams Of Rio

Newcastle United’s French contingent were left with nightmares rather than dreams of Rio next Summer.

Despite having more possession (59% v 41%), more shots on target (6 v 4) and more corners (9 v 2), it was the Ukraine who walked away with the only two goals of the match.

Mathieu Debuchy played the full game on Friday night, Moussa Sissoko replaced Loic Remy after 62 minutes, whilst Yohan Cabaye never got off the bench.

Tuesday night’s return match means France aren’t out of it but they are facing the possibility of missing their first major tournament since 1994.

Those with a few years on the clock will recall that France were one of three teams who played at St.James’ Park during the next tournament – Euro 96, Tyneside playing a part therefore in developing the all conquering team of 1998…

However, the present day vintage could be left disappointed as a two goal disadvantage could be tricky to overturn against an often mean Ukraine defence.

Newcastle fans will be looking on with mixed feelings when it comes to our four players’ possible involvement in Paris ahead of the home match with Norwich.
