Newcastle Linked With Goal Shy Striker – Haven’t NUFC Got Enough Of Those Already?
As the rumour mill churns out names by the day, Newcastle United were linked with a number of players over the weekend.
With on loan Loic Remy the only regular goal scorer it isn’t surprising that forwards figure highly.
As usual the targets follow a pattern and tend to have certain ingredients, on this occasion the supposed target is young enough (26) to fit Newcastle’s potential resale value policy, plus his contract only has months to go which suggest a deal on price may be done.
The only problem is that the stats say that he is a striker who doesn’t score many goals.
The player in question is West Brom striker Shane Long and I must admit I’ve thought he’s looked decent at times in matches against Newcastle.
However, when you look at his record, Long’s record in the Premier League is only 22 goals in 124 matches in his time at Reading and West Brom. In fact he has only ever scored double figures once in a season and that was in the Championship.
While I think it is a no-brainer that Newcastle need to add goals to the squad in January, adding yet another striker who may have other attributes but doesn’t add many goals, must be a doubtful policy.
