Newcastle Defender Bounces Back ‘The Jerseys Are There To Be Won’
Newcastle United central defender Mike Williamson has spoken of his gratitude to manager Alan Pardew for giving him a chance in Newcastle’s first team.
Due to injuries to centre back duo Fabricio Coloccini, the club captain, and local lad Steven Taylor, Pardew has had little choice but to call upon ‘Willo,’ and recent recruit Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to cover in the heart of his defence. Few would argue that they haven’t risen to the task.
“We have been defending from the front as a unit. We know we have players in the team who can break defences. It’s the other side we have to work on. That’s what we’re doing.”
Williamson is under no illusions, however, and predicts that his skipper may well be back in the team sooner rather than later.
“The jerseys are there to be won. Colo is a world class player and a fantastic skipper and we’ll see on Saturday (v Norwich).”
