He Loves It On Tyneside But What’s Newcastle Star’s Best Position To Keep Him Here Long-Term?

First of all, Santon is a very good player, no issues – maybe potentially an international player but what is his best position?

He thinks it is left back, Pardew appears to think so, but is it?

Santon is predominantly right footed and from left-back cuts inside when attacking and hardly ever goes to the byline. In many ways this has meant he has been effective – certainly last season he was possibly out most consistent player.  However, what you need is a combination with the man in front and if that man is say Gouffran who also tends to come inside (or Remy or even Jonas) then it becomes too easy to defend against. You really want one genuine left footer whose tendency will be to go wide and one to cut in, such as  the best  at his trade – Baines over at Everton. I get the feeling Haidara or Dummett are earmarked for that role going forward and that makes sense.

Right-back may be more natural for him but we have a pretty good one at the moment and he would struggle to get ahead of him. Furthermore, I am not convinced that he is a great defender, his positioning is often suspect and he clearly enjoys going forward best.

I have often thought that he would be best in midfield but as he has not played there regularly then who knows. He has masses of talent, can take on and beat people, retains the ball well and can tackle – he is also not too shabby on pace. However, our midfield is a little cluttered at the moment so we will just have to wait and see.

I know there was more talk in the press about him leaving but sod that – how do we get the best out of this talented player who clearly enjoys living in the area?
