Tino Asprilla Can Only See The Money, Not The Quality

Newcastle United’s mercurial former striker Faustino Asprilla launched a stinging attack on the modern-day footballer, when speaking to Italian media.

After Kevin Keegan signed the Colombian for United from Parma for around £7million in the late 90s, Asprilla scored some crucial goals for Newcastle against top opposition, including a hat-trick against Spanish giants Barcelona. He remains highly thought of on Tyneside but regards today’s professionals with disdain.

I earned good money but nowhere near as much as players get now.

Nowadays, even a flop earns per month what someone like Marco van Basten earned in a year. I do not see many players of van Basten’s level around.”

Columbian Asprilla, 43, enjoyed just under two calendar years on Tyneside before being sold back to Parma for £6million by United manager Kenny Dalglish.

He then went on to become something of a journeyman overseas; appearing for clubs in Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Chile, while still finding time to appear in a number of exhibition games for Newcastle, including Steve Harper’s recent testimonial match against AC Milan Glorie.

For no other reason than it is a wet Monday afternoon on Tyneside we bring you Tino’s unforgettable hat-trick v Barca, via The Mag’s YouTube Channel (Click HERE to subscribe for free)
