Tim Krul – The Drugs Do Work
Last season’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland hurt Newcastle United goalkeeper in more ways than one: not only was his pride as a professional dented, but a dislocated shoulder suffered in the game meant that the Dutchman ended the night on gas and air to numb the pain.
“Because of the medication, I was totally spaced out. It was probably the best place to be.”
That injury ended last season prematurely for Krul, cost him his place in the Dutch national team and was the third serious lay-off he suffered over the last campaign.
“They were all freaky injuries, but the old saying goes that these things come in threes so hopefully I have had my fair share.
“It was a massive test of character for me, but in a career you need to deal with the lows and unfortunately I had three.
“I’ve told myself I just want 38 games again like I did when we finished fifth and show the manager I am back at the level I was at when he chose me as number one.”
