Shola Ameobi Takes Big Step Towards Brazil
Shola Ameobi’s Nigeria faced a crucial first leg match of a two-legged tie against Ethiopia.
The play-off winners earning the right to be in Brazil next summer for the World Cup finals.
With Ethiopia ranked 93rd in the World compared to Nigeria, Shola’s Super Eagles were big favourites to make it to Brazil but went a goal behind just after half-time today, the match having a 2pm kick-off UK time.
Nigeria were rocked, having qualified for the finals four times compared to Ethiopia never having made it to the finals.
However, Emmanuel Emenike struck back twice to give Nigeria barely deserved win and a 2-1 win to take into the home leg.
Shola had declared himself fully fit and available in advance of the match but in the event never made it onto the pitch, hopefully he won’t come manage to come back injured…
So good news over the weekend for all three Newcastle players taking part in the play-offs, though Papiss Cisse getting on the scoresheet for Senegal will be small personal consolation after his side went down 3-1 in their first leg, as Shola and Cheick Tiote both registered wins.
