Shola Ameobi “I Must Make The Sacrifice”
A big international weekend and Shola Ameobi joined up with his Nigerian teammates, eventually.
Shola turned up late and blamed it on a mix-up with flights, over the years we had the opposite where our international players often turned up late when they travelled back to Newcastle. A ‘will they won’t they be back in time’ scenario that kept the newspapers in headlines.
“It was very long and tiring but I’m getting used to it, but I want to go to the World Cup with Nigeria, so I must make the sacrifice.
I worked hard to ensure that I’m fit for this game and I can tell you that I’m fully fit and happy to be here.
We don’t need any extra motivation whatsoever to beat Ethiopia and the squad knows the importance of being at the World Cup, that is the only motivation we need to do our country proud.”
It is curious from a Newcastle point of view that Shola is saying he is fully fit and over a week ago he was also saying he would definitely be ok for international duty. Yet at Cardiff on Saturday he wasn’t even on the bench, despite there not being another out and out striker named amongst the subs. The closest was Sammy Ameobi and so I wonder if the younger Ameobi has overtaken his older brother in Alan Pardew’s options?
