Police Claim Derby Day Success
Twenty arrests were made surrounding last Sunday’s derby match at Sunderland, however, only 3 of the 20 arrested were Newcastle United fans.
The police have issued information surrounding Sunday’s derby and their arrests connected with it.
Of the three Newcastle fans, a Shieldfield man was arrested before the game and charged with a breach of his football banning order, while a man from Jarrow was arrested during the game and charged with being drunk and disorderly. The other arrested Newcastle fan was also charged with a breach of his football banning order.
Meanwhile, Sunderland fans were arrested both before and during the game and charged with a variety of offences including: being drunk in a sports ground, suspicion of violent disorder and suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder.
All those arrested will appear before Magistrates courts across the region over the coming weeks.
Northumbria Police’s Chief Superintendent said “I’m very pleased that the majority of fans who attended [the derby] were clearly there to enjoy the football and not interested in causing trouble. Twenty arrests for a crowd that size is very low.”
