Obertan Shows ‘Lesser Players’ The Way

After his performance for the reserves on Monday night against Bolton, Gabriel Obertan received special praise from reserve team head coach Willie Donachie.

Captain for the night Obertan enjoyed a decent game and set up Adam Campbell for the Magpies equaliser against the Wanderers and Donachie was ecstatic with the Frenchman’s attitude and application.

Coming down to play with lesser players is always difficult but I thought his attitude was very good. He was outstanding for the goal and showed his class. I was pleased with him.”

Obertan has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season; appearing just once as a late substitute in the Capital One Cup against Leeds United, when he looked lively but spurned several good chances to extend United’s lead against the Championship side.

The former Manchester United man was one of four Newcastle players with first-team experience; he and colleagues Gael Bigirimana, Adam Campbell and James Tavernier will all be hoping that their performances for the reserve team will not go unnoticed by senior side manager Alan Pardew.
