Mapou On SAS Mission

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa will return to the heart of Newcastle United’s defence against Liverpool tomorrow lunch-time, following Fabricio Coloccini’s withdrawal from the squad with a groin injury.

Yanga-Mbiwa was replaced by Mike Williamson at half-time after the first-half horror show at Everton and did not feature in United’s following fixture; a 2-1 away win at Cardiff City. He will return tomorrow afternoon, however, to partner Williamson with club captain Coloccini sidelined and manager Alan Pardew is confident the young Frenchman can cope with the threat of Liverpool’s SAS strike force: Sturridge and Suarez.

It takes time to adjust to the Premier League,” said Pardew, “Mapou came out of the team, but he has put in some strong performances for the club.

“You’re looking for a bit of character in a player; we’ve seen that in him.

“He’s a player with tremendous pace. He has to utilise that.

“These two particular strikers (Sturridge and Suarez) are going to give you problems. They play in front of your back four and your units have to be close. Our midfield has an important a job as do our back four.”
