Is Remy v Cisse Really A No Contest? – What The Stats Say

8 years ago

I’m guessing if you stopped 100 people on the way to the match and asked whether Cisse or Remy was the more likely scorer at the moment, I reckon the Frenchman would no doubt win by a landslide.

However, isn’t the key to quality strikers that they go through good and…bad spells, with even the very best not immune to this.

As things stand, Remy has 5 Premier League goals and Cisse has zero – Ben Arfa (2), Gouufran(1) and Cabaye (1) have the others.

So does Papiss Cisse have any chance of competing with Remy as Newcastle’s top scorer? I think if you look at the last few years, rather than weeks, you’ll see there is every chance that the Senegal striker can strike back.

Their respective league goals are as follows;

Papiss Cisse
2010/11 22 Goals   32 Games
2011/12 22 Goals   31 Games
2012/13  8 Goals    36 Games
2013/14  0 Goals      7 Games

Loic Remy
2010/11 16 Goals   33 Games
2011/12 12 Goals   29 Games
2012/13  7 Goals    28 Games
2013/14  5 Goals      5 Games

So even including this poor start to the season, Cisse clearly has the edge with 50 in 106 matches while Remy is 40 in 95.

When it comes to cup goals for your club, including Europe, Cisse has 8 goals in 14 appearances while Remy is 14 in 37 matches.

Bringing all the stats together, Cisse has played 120 matches and scored 58, while Remy is on 54 goals from 132 games.

Maybe the main point to make is that both have very good overall scoring records over the last three and a bit years but Cisse is clearly in front.

You can say that a decent number of Remy’s European matches were in the Champions League but there again, all of Cisse’s league goals in this period have come in the German and English leagues, both much higher rated than France where Remy’s scored the vast majority of his.

I think there is value in Cisse bouncing back and being Newcastle top scorer this season and at 5/.1 I think he is excellent value. A couple against Liverpool (just like two seasons ago) in our next match and the complexion totally changes.

The current betting to be Newcastle’s top Premier League scorer this season is as follows;

2/5  Remy
5/1  Cisse
8/1  Ben Arfa
12/1 Gouffran
Then selected ones (Obertan or Jonas, what a choice!)
33/1 Shola
50/1 Obertan
100/1 Jonas
