Harper Saves…But Shearer Scores

Former Newcastle United football star, Steve Harper, has been supporting Alan Shearer’s Foundation with a share in his 20 Year Charity Match fundraiser.

The charity was awarded £22,500 at a ceremony at St James’ Park along with five other local causes. They all benefited from the takings of the 50,000 supporters who saw Alan lead a Newcastle XI team against AC Milan at the testimonial match last month.

“Obviously Alan’s a legend and his charity is doing fantastic work with disabled kids in the area,” said Steve.

He told the six beneficiaries receiving a share of the £327,000 pot that he “got a good feeling” being able to give away that kind of money. “I am more than certain this money will be put back to do good,” he said.

Alan Shearer Centre user, Carolyn Lawson, was among the guests invited to the cheque presentation ceremony. She appreciates the Centre’s social events and skills sessions designed for disabled adults, particularly when other resources in the area have recently closed due to lack of funding: “I like meeting my friends at the Alan Shearer Centre and enjoy doing arts and crafts there,” she said.

Foundation Operations Manager, Nicola Milne, said that Steve’s donation would go towards the Foundation’s aims of keeping the specialist facilities for people with complex needs free at the Alan Shearer Centre as well as offering some free respite places at the Short Break service and for continued development of the charity’s disability provision.
