Haidara Pulls Out But Beardsley Scores On Harmison’s Big Night

The scheduled return to action of Massadio Haidara failed to materialise last night, the player pulled out of the squad that took part in a friendly which was part of Geordie cricket legend Stephen Harmison’s benefit year, with money also being raised for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

Hopefully Haidara’s absence was just a precaution but despite a cold, wet and windy night up in Northumberland the crowd were treated to a great night’s entertainment.

The Newcastle Xl featured Peter Beardsley and there were only three minutes on the clock when he opened the scoring.

An ‘open’ game saw NUFC win an eleven goal thriller 8-3, with the Northumberland Xl going four down before they brought the score back to 4-3.

Harmison played the full 90 minutes as his mixed side of non-league players with a few added cricket stars acquitted themselves well, Durham’s wicketkeeper Phil ‘Colonel’ Mustard even getting on the scoresheet.
