Dummett Now Odds On To Start At Sunderland

There were not that many defensive options open to Alan Pardew in the absence of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Fabricio Coloccini.

One of the few selection debates amongst fans was whether or not Steven Taylor would return from injury and play alongside Mike Williamson, or whether Paul Dummett would get his first Premier League start as an emergency centre-half.

That argument could now be academic with the Shields Gazetter now reporting that Taylor is unlikely to be fit enough to play on Sunday.

So Paul Dummett is in line to make his first league start in the most high octane atmosphere he could have chosen.

It just shows how quickly things can change in football and from being on the fringes of the squad, Dummett could end up having being involved in two massive first team matches within eight days.

Unfortunately for him, if he gets his opportunity on Sunday then it is almost certain to be at centre-back rather than his natural left-back position, meaning that with Mapou and Taylor almost certainly available against Manchester City in midweek, he will relinquish his centre-back place no matter how well he does on Sunday, if selected.
