Coloccini Return To Argentina Sparks Fears Of Long-Term Absence

Alarm bells are ringing as Fabricio Coloccini has been allowed by Newcastle to return to Argentina to recover from his groin injury.

No return date has been put forward leading fans to fear that the rehabilitation time isn’t going to be short.

Alan Pardew had only confirmed his captain would miss the derby match on Sunday and now real sceptics will be putting forward ‘San Lorenzo’ and ‘January Transfer Window’ in the same sentence again.

The relief of Coloccini’s commitment to Newcastle in the summer (or realisation of the financial fallout if he’d forced his departure) has been short-lived.

While on paper Newcastle appear to have a number of options at centre-back once Steven Taylor is match fit and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa completes his suspension, the reality is that playing long-term without Coloccini isn’t a pleasant thought.

This weekend the smart money seems to be on a fit again Steven Taylor playing alongside Mike Williamson despite Paul Dummett’s impressive cameo on Saturday against Liverpool.
