Alan Pardew ‘Sometimes We Show Our Love In Different Ways Here’
The Newcastle match with Liverpool had a bit of everything but Alan Pardew has picked up on something that I’m afraid I missed.
Following the final whistle, the Newcastle manager picked up on on the fan reaction to Steven Gerrard.
“Sometimes we show our love in different ways here. We can tease and be sarcastic in our support but there was genuine love for Steven Gerrard as he has got us to the World Cup with his captaincy.
“Their honest and sportsmanship, they clapped Steven Gerrard, and their support was outstanding.”
I might have only been one of fifty thousand or so but I certainly didn’t clap Gerrard and nobody around me did either, or anybody within shouting distance.
It is claimed that when Gerrard took a couple of first half corners at the Gallowgate end, the Liverpool captain was applauded for his contribution to the England cause.
Well, I sit in the Leazes so just possibly I missed that but I can certainly say that there was no love flowing from the Newcastle fans in the Leazes end for Gerrard in the second half.
Like most Newcastle fans I’d rather England qualified but that’s about as far as it goes, while I don’t see how struggling to get out of such a poor group is any kind of real triumph.
As for Gerrard himself, I don’t think he has been any kind of friend to Newcastle or its fans and in fact quite the opposite, with his poor sportsmanship and often sly nasty tackles over the years that have gone largely unpunished thanks to his England Stevie G halo.
