When Micky Quinn played at Newcastle United I was fortunate enough to interview him a number of times and he was always great company.

Since he left Tyneside as a player, I’ve met Micky a number of times since and he’s the same character you see on your TV screens, plus he’s a really genuine bloke as well.

Four Goals – Now That Is What I Call A Debut!

However, when he arrived at Newcastle in the summer of 1989 he walked into a club that was in the middle of a civil war. Gordon McKeag resisting any change while the fans were giving their overwhelming support to the then Magpie Group headed by John Hall.

With the club in crisis and the Hall/McKeag struggle seemingly at deadlock, there was an organised boycott of matches with fans United in their love of Newcastle United but split as to what exactly to do to help bring about change.

To stay away from matches was a step too far for many and then when the first fixture of the season threw up Leeds at home it made things even more complicated.

Leeds had spent big money that summer and were big favourites to get promotion to the then first division. Whatever the home turnout of fans, Leeds were guaranteed to bring thousands sand thousands on the short trip north, talk about Deja Vu!

With Newcastle fans in such a negative mindset, United’s summer signings were going to have to instantly prove themselves.

A banner at the time read ‘Micky Who?’, well Tyneside was just about to find out.
