Shola Now One Step Away From Brazil

8 years ago

Saturday night saw Shola, at the ripe old age of 31, make his competitive debut for Nigeria.

Having represented England at Under 21 level, Ameobi first played for Nigeria in a friendly against Venezuela in 2012.

Nigeria needed at least a draw against Malawi to then reach a final two legged play-off which would then see them heading for Brazil if successful.

A two goal win, including a goal from Victor Moses, has sent Nigeria through to that play-off and Shola came off the bench in the 84th minute to face his first competitive action and almost scored only for his effort to be saved.

Speaking afterwards Shola said;

“It is a thing of joy and honour, I want to thank the coach for giving me the opportunity of helping the Super Eagles. We have a very good squad of players here.

We can’t think too far ahead and just have to wait and see who we will play (in the two legged play-off).”

In these days of Premier League mega-money I was amused to read that the man of the match had been awarded a prize of $5,000. I wonder if it will change John Obi Mikel of Chelsea’s life?
