Shearer, Sir Bobby, Gazza – For Club & Country
As a kid, England was like another country in football terms. I’d just missed the Supermac era and so watching the national team was something that seemed a lot more distant than 300 miles away.
However, that all changed with Geordies becoming a dominant force in the England set-up.
The European nights of the 90s and noughties were yet to arrive for Newcastle, Italia ’90 was also a different world to watching the Toon play Bohemians and Bastia in 70s UEFA Cup matches!
That world cup in Italy was glorious, seeing Beardsley, Waddle and Gazza as the dominant creative forces that almost brought the Jules Rimet home, what a story that would have been. Of course as I watched those three star in the white of England, I couldn’t help but think how different things could have been if Newcastle had been a properly run club, just how far could that trio have taken Newcastle United?
Six years later and it was Alan Shearer who was the star of the England show, finishing top scorer in Euro ’96. Once again arguably the best team lost as Shearer and Gazza went so close, little were we to know that Alan Shearer was just weeks away from heading back to Tyneside…
I dream again of seeing Newcastle stars also proudly wearing the England strip, I know that might seem a bit distant at the moment considering we are lucky to even field an Englishman now!
However, things can change and I do know how differently I felt about England when the likes of Shearer was later captain of Newcastle as well.
This week we are looking at various angles that tie NUFC together with England and we have items featuring Gazza and Shearer in the latest Mag Auctions of classic Newcastle United memorabilia, plus many other items featuring the likes of Chris Waddle and Sir Bobby Robson.
