Reported Ashley Cut Backroom Staff & Blocked Any New Additions As Well As No Player Signings

A respected football business website has reported that as well as the much publicised no new signings policy at Newcastle United, Mike Ashley also blocked any additions to backroom staff AND actually cut essential staff from the workforce.

The independent Football Economy website has a great reputation for its information and analysis, plus there is no reason to believe that the motive is any axe to grind with Ashley as they cover every club and angle of football business in general.

This is what they reported;

‘Apparently, signing Gomis would have meant Newcastle taking an overdraft of £7m and owner Mike Ashley thought that Gomis was overpriced. The same also applied to Darren Bent with whom mastermind Joe Kinnear also held talks.

In the summer Ashley blocked any additions to backroom staff, other than on a consultancy basis, while other departments, including the media team, have lost personnel.’

It is sad that at the very time there has never been more money in football that there have been further staff cutbacks at Newcastle United, a very short-sighted policy considering this is the very time that a club like Newcastle United should be investing in key staff to take the club forward, on and off the pitch. No wonder as Alan Pardew says, ‘how can Newcastle compete with the likes of Southampton, Swansea etc….?’
