Pardew Reveals Who Will Partner Coloccini At Villa

A strange start to the season, even by Newcastle United standards, has seen the fans have to wait some four hours for the opposition keeper to have to make a proper save and near four and a half hours for the first Premier League goal.

On the other hand, Alan Pardew has naturally been keen to point to three consecutive clean sheets, if you include the League Cup match at Morecambe.

Maybe one of the manager’s easiest tasks this weekend was deciding on his defensive line-up, though he now has Steven Taylor free from suspension.

This is what Pardew said to the Chronicle as to whether he would keep Mapou alongside Coloccini against Villa;

“That will be the case on Saturday, he is a player we have invested a lot of money in. We have to help players blossom and to do that need games.

Mapou has improved considerably; he has made mistakes in the Premier League like most players but he has learnt from them quickly.

He’s got a turn of speed and that can really get us out of trouble, he has been a big asset to us in getting 3 clean sheets.”

Steven Taylor seems to have big highs and very deep lows, he is a larger than life character and so fans at times thrive on his confidence and enthusiasm, which transforms into perceived arrogance, cockiness and stupidity when things go against the player and team.

The sending off at City was the last thing we needed but the suspension will have given him time to rethink and refocus, the past telling us that he is more than capable of learning his lesson and bouncing back.

We asked the fans who they thought should start the Villa match and [intlink id=”33862″ type=”post”]Taylor scored only 18% compared to Mapou\’s 81%[/intlink], an all time low for Taylor I’m guessing after his daft sending off pushed a fair few over the edge.

In contrast Mapou has done OK against Villa and Fulham, while he and the team he captained were lucky to survive Morecambe, hopefully the French centre-back will quickly learn his lessons as the manager has claimed. He could be a real asset but it is tough for a continental centre-half to step up to the Premier League, another clean sheet today will tick a lot of boxes, especially with somebody like Benteke up against them.
