Newcastle v Leed – SJP Braced For Biggest Away Fan Invasion In Years
Leeds United have all but sold-out of their allocation of tickets for this Wednesday’s League Cup tie with Newcastle United. The Yorkshire club are expected to be backed by a following of over 6000 fans (Allocated 6000 normal seats plus a corporate area).
Leeds manager Brian McDermott praised his club’s fans’ loyalty after defeat away to Reading. “They were outstanding. They’ve travelled a long way in great numbers.” Leeds also attracted an away following of around 5000 to the Reebok Stadium to see them emerge victorious, beating the Wanderers 1-0.
While the number of Newcastle fans in attendance may be affected by this Saturday’s defeat to Hull City, Leeds are expecting their biggest away following of the season.
This Wednesday will see Leeds’ first competitive visit to St James’ Park since the 2003/2004 season when an Alan Shearer goal was the difference between the two sides. While Newcastle have a decent record in the League against Leeds, they have never succeeded in knocking them out of a Cup competition.
