Newcastle United’s Luckiest Ever Escape

The fans of Newcastle United have endured some dark days but back in 2004 we may have had one of our luckiest ever escapes.

The appointment of Graeme Souness to replace Sir Bobby was catastrophic but it could have been so much worse.

With Hull City up today, windbag Steve Bruce has been given a platform to blow out more hot air than…something that blows out an awful lot of hot air.

This is what he’s had to say about our lucky escape….

“I was very very close in 2004 after Sir Bobby left but at the time I had just signed a new deal with Birmingham, it was going to be difficult to just leave after saying to Birmingham I would stay. I had committed myself and couldn’t go back on my word.

It didn’t happen but I was close, being one of them of course it is one that I look out for. I’m a Geordie and it is the club I supported as a boy.”

Souness was a disgrace but I think having to listen to Bruce’s plastic Geordie patter would have been a step way too far.

As for being ‘one of them’…well he’s not one of me I can tell you!
